How to tell if a job application tool is really free
Free forever, freemium, free trial, free with your own API key: what each one means for a job search, and a five-minute check to run before you upload your resume.
Nearly every job application tool says “free” somewhere on its homepage. Then you paste in your resume, tailor it to a job, and hit the paywall on the download, the second cover letter or the sixth application this month. When you’re job hunting, that’s time you don’t get back. Here’s how to tell the kinds of free apart before you start.
The four kinds of free
| Kind | What it means | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Free forever | No paid tier; every feature in one version | How the tool is funded |
| Freemium | Free plan with caps or missing features | Which features are paid |
| Free trial | Paid product, free for a few days or uses | Card required up front |
| Bring your own key | Free tool, you pay the AI provider | Per-use API charges |
None of these is dishonest. Freemium is how most software pays for itself. The problem is only when the free part isn’t the part you need.
The five-minute check
1. Read the pricing page, not the homepage
The homepage says “free”. The pricing page says what it’s free for. Look for a table of plans. If there’s a Pro, Plus or Premium column, read which rows have a tick only there. In job tools, the paid rows are almost always AI tailoring, cover letters and AI answers to application questions.
2. Find the caps
Caps hide in small print: “5 tailored resumes a month”, “20 AI drafts a day”, “250 one-time credits”. Work out how many jobs you’ll apply to in a month. If you’re doing a few targeted applications a day, a monthly cap of five runs out in the first week.
3. Check the download
Some resume builders let you build for free and charge for the PDF, or add a watermark on the free version. Make one throwaway resume and download it before you put in real effort.
4. Ask where the AI comes from
If a tool asks for your own OpenAI or Claude API key, the tool is free but each generation is billed to you by that provider. That can still be cheap, and it’s a fair model, but it isn’t zero. Google Gemini, NVIDIA and OpenRouter offer free tiers with rate limits. The cheapest setup is a tool with a built-in AI option that needs no key.
5. See how it’s paid for
Free software is paid for somehow: ads, a paid tier, or investor money. Check the privacy policy for whether your data is sold. For a tool holding your resume, phone number and work history, this matters more than the price.
Free is not the only test
Two more things are worth checking before you commit, because they’re harder to undo than a subscription:
- Does the AI invent things? A free tool that adds a skill or certification you don’t have to match a job puts a lie on your resume. Look for tools that only reword what you wrote, and that show you each change.
- Does it submit for you? Auto-apply tools send applications without you reading them. A wrong answer on a sponsorship question goes out in your name.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between free and freemium?
A free tool has no paid tier: every feature is in the one version. A freemium tool has a free plan with caps or missing features, and a paid plan that removes them.
Why do so many resume builders charge to download?
The download is the moment you need the product most, so some builders let you write for free and charge for the PDF. Check that you can download a finished resume on the free plan before you spend time writing it.
Is a tool that needs my own API key free?
The tool may be, but the AI might not be. Gemini, NVIDIA and OpenRouter have free tiers with their own limits, while OpenAI and Claude keys are billed per use. A tool with a built-in free AI option avoids this.
Is SealApply really free?
Yes. SealApply has no paid tier: resume tailoring, ATS checks, cover letters, autofill and tracking are free forever, and the built-in AI needs no API key. Only outside AI providers you choose to connect have their own limits.
