Free AI Cover Letter Generator: How to Get a Letter That Sounds Like You
AI can draft a cover letter in seconds, but the draft is only as good as what you give it and what you change. A practical guide to inputs, edits and the mistakes that give an AI letter away.
A free AI cover letter generator can give you a decent draft in under a minute. The problem is that a draft from the same prompt looks like every other draft, and readers have seen them. I built SealApply, which has one, and what follows is what I have learned about getting a letter out of any generator that sounds like a person wrote it.
First, whether you need one at all. Not every application does, and I covered that in do you still need a cover letter in 2026. If you do, read on.
Write a cover letter in the app
Is there a free AI cover letter generator?
Yes, a few. SealApply’s cover letter generator is free with no paid plan. On its page you upload your resume, paste the job, and get a plain-text letter with no sign-in; nothing is saved. Inside the app, Build Cover Letter on a job gives you an editor, three templates, and PDF or HTML download. That version uses the free AI, which runs through Puter and needs a Puter sign-in. You can use your own AI key instead. No SealApply account is needed.
A general chatbot also works if you paste in your resume and the post. The difference is mostly convenience: a dedicated tool already knows the format and keeps the letter tied to your resume. For a one-off letter, a chatbot is perfectly fine.
What should I give the generator?
The quality of the letter is set by the input. Give it three things.
- Your real resume. The generator writes from what is on it and should not add jobs, skills or results you did not list. If the resume is thin, the letter will be too. The free AI resume builder can help fix that first.
- The full job description. Not a title. The requirements are what the letter should answer.
- One reason you want this job. A sentence is enough. This is the part an AI cannot invent for you.
How do I make an AI cover letter sound like me?
Edit it. I do these five passes, in this order.
- Replace the opening. “I am writing to express my interest” tells the reader nothing. Start with the role and the one thing you would bring.
- Cut stock phrases. “Passionate,” “dynamic,” “proven track record.” If you would not say it to a friend, delete it.
- Make one example concrete. Pick one thing from your resume that matches a requirement and say what you did and what happened. Use real numbers only if you have them.
- Add a company detail. A product you used, a post you read, a problem they are working on. One true specific line does more than three general ones.
- Read it aloud. Anywhere you stumble, rewrite it in plain words.
What mistakes make an AI cover letter obvious?
- It repeats the resume. The letter should explain and connect, not list.
- It is too long. Aim for roughly 150 to 300 words.
- Wrong name or role. Check the company and job title every time, especially if you reuse a draft.
- Claims you cannot back up. Delete anything you did not do. You may be asked about it in the interview.
- Identical wording across applications. Tailor the opening and the company line at least.
What does a good AI-assisted letter look like?
Four short paragraphs is enough. The first names the role and the one strongest reason you fit. The second gives a single concrete example from your resume, in your own words. The third says why this company, with the specific detail you added. The last is a plain close that says you would welcome a conversation. If the generator gives you something longer, cut it down rather than polishing every sentence.
Keep a plain-text copy as well. Some application forms have a text box with a character limit instead of an upload, and a short version you have already edited saves you rewriting it under time pressure. Also keep the AI honest: if the draft mentions a tool, a number or a result that is not on your resume, take it out before you do anything else.
How do I match the letter to the job?
Tailor the resume first, then write the letter from the tailored version, so both point at the same requirements. The resume tailoring tool and the ATS resume checker help with the resume side, and the job match score tells you which jobs deserve a custom letter in the first place. If an application also asks why you want to work there, see the “why do you want to work here” answer.
When the letter is done, the autofill widget can fill the rest of the form, and you click Submit yourself. Log the application in the tracker. For the whole sequence see how to use AI to apply for jobs for free.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free AI cover letter generator?
Yes. SealApply's cover letter generator is free: upload your resume, paste the job description and get a plain-text letter. Nothing is saved, and the generator on that page needs no sign-in. A general chatbot's free tier can also draft one from pasted text.
How do I make an AI cover letter sound human?
Edit it in your own voice. Shorten long sentences, remove stock phrases, add one real detail about the company or the work, and read it aloud. If a sentence is something you would never say, change it.
Will employers know my cover letter was written by AI?
Possibly, if it is generic. Letters that use stock phrases, repeat the resume and say nothing specific read as templated whoever wrote them. A letter with a specific detail and your own wording is much less likely to.
Does the cover letter generator need a sign-in?
The generator on the cover letter page works with no sign-in. Inside the app, the Build Cover Letter option on a job uses the free AI, which runs through Puter and needs a Puter sign-in. No SealApply account is needed either way.
What should I give an AI to write a cover letter?
Your full resume and the full job description. Add a line or two on why you want this job if you can. More real material gives better output than a bare job title.
