How to Score Your Resume Against a Job Description for Free
Paste a job post, compare it with your resume, and get a score with the reasons behind it. How the number is worked out, how to read it, and what to change.
If you want to score your resume against a job description for free, the useful version is not a single number. It is a comparison that tells you what the post wants, what your resume already shows, and what is missing. I built SealApply, and its job match score is one way to do that. I will explain how it works so you can judge it, and show how to do a rough version by hand.
One honest caveat up front: the score is an AI estimate of fit. It is not a prediction of an interview, and no employer ever sees it.
Score jobs against your resume
How do I check if my resume matches a job description?
By hand, read the post and highlight every required skill, tool and year of experience. Then search your resume for each one. Anything you cannot find is either a real gap or something you did and left off. That second group is the one worth catching, because it is the cheapest fix.
A tool does the same reading faster and can apply the same weights every time. That consistency is the main benefit: you can compare five postings on equal terms instead of going on gut feel.
How is the match score worked out?
The AI rates four parts against the post, and the overall score is calculated from them. It is not asked for a separate overall guess, so the number cannot disagree with the breakdown under it.
| Part | Weight | What it looks at |
|---|---|---|
| Skills | 45 | Tools and skills the post asks for |
| Experience | 25 | Roles, seniority and years |
| Projects | 20 | Work that shows the skills |
| Education | 10 | Degree and field, where asked |
Skills carry the most weight because that is what most postings screen on. Education carries the least, since many postings accept equivalent experience.
What is a good resume match score?
- 85 and up, Strong Match. Apply, and tailor lightly.
- 70 to 84, Good Match. Worth applying to; check the gaps for anything you can add truthfully.
- 50 to 69, Fair Match. Apply if you want the role and can close the main gaps in the resume.
- Below 50, Weak Match. Usually a stretch. Decide deliberately.
Do not treat these as pass marks. A 65 for a role you are excited about, where the gaps are things you have done but not written down, is a better use of an evening than a 90 for a job you do not want.
How do I score my resume for free, step by step?
- Add your resume (PDF, DOCX or TXT) or paste its text.
- Paste up to five job posts. Include the full post and its requirements, not just the title.
- Sign in to the free AI in the app’s settings. It takes about a minute and needs no SealApply account.
- Your profile is filled in from the resume, and the jobs appear in the Jobs tab and score themselves.
- Open a job and choose Analyze How Well You Fit to see the strengths and gaps behind the score.
Your resume and jobs wait in your browser until you sign in. Once the AI runs, the text is sent to the AI provider you connected, so it can read it.
What should I do with the gaps?
Sort each gap into one of three piles.
- You have it, the resume does not say it. Add it, using the post’s wording where it is accurate. The resume tailoring tool does this and shows each change.
- You have something close. Describe it honestly, in terms the post will recognise.
- You do not have it. Leave it. Do not add it, and decide whether the role is still worth applying to.
After editing, run the ATS resume checker to see keyword coverage, and see how to find resume keywords in a job description if you want to do it manually. Starting from scratch? The free AI resume builder can write a first version from your notes. For the full editing process, see how to tailor your resume to a job description.
Why score each job separately?
A resume that scores 88 for one posting can score 52 for another that sounds similar. Titles hide the real requirements: two “data analyst” roles can ask for different tools, different seniority and different domain knowledge. Scoring each post on its own is what makes the number useful. It also lets you rank a week’s worth of postings and spend your tailoring time on the top few, rather than giving every application the same thin effort.
If you see the same gap in several postings, that is a signal about your resume or your skills, not about any one job. A tool you keep missing, or a kind of project you never mention, is worth fixing once so every later application benefits. I would rather you learn that from five scores than from twenty silent rejections.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check if my resume matches a job description?
Compare the post's required skills and experience with what your resume shows, or use a match-score tool to do it for you. Paste the full post including the requirements, and read the strengths and gaps it returns, not just the number.
What is a good resume match score?
In SealApply, 70 and above is a Good Match and 85 and above is Strong. Below 50 is Weak. A lower score on a job you want is not a reason to skip it; read the gaps and see whether they are real or just missing from the resume.
Is a match score the same as an ATS score?
No. A match score estimates how well you fit the job. An ATS checker looks at how your resume reads against the post, such as keyword coverage and structure. Both are useful, and neither is what an employer's system literally shows you.
How many jobs can I score at once?
You can queue up to five from the page, and add more from the Jobs tab once you are in the app. The free AI has its own usage allowance, so very large batches may need your own AI key.
Do I need a SealApply account to score my resume?
No SealApply account is needed. The default free AI runs through Puter, which asks you to sign in, and that takes about a minute in the app's settings.
Does the employer see my match score?
No. The score is only for you, to help decide where to spend your time. It is not sent to the employer.
