Free Resume Generator: 7 Things to Check Before You Upload Your Resume
A resume has your name, phone and work history on it. Before you hand it to any free generator, run through these seven checks.
A free resume generator is only free if you are comfortable with what you give it. Your resume holds your name, contact details, employers and dates, which is a lot to hand to a website you found five minutes ago. I built SealApply, so I am on the other side of this question, and these are the seven checks I would run on any tool, including mine.
Build a new resume with AI
1. Where does your resume text go?
Browser-based does not mean nothing leaves your device. Many generators send your text to a server, and AI-based ones send it to an AI provider. Look for a plain statement in the privacy policy or on the page.
In SealApply, your resume or notes and the job post wait in your browser first. When the AI runs, the text goes to the AI provider you connected, which is Puter by default. I would rather you know that before you start.
2. What sign-in does it ask for?
“No sign-up” is a phrase to read carefully. SealApply does not need a SealApply account for these tools, but the default free AI asks you to sign in to Puter once, which takes about a minute. Only the cover letter generator works with no sign-in on its page. A good tool tells you this on the first screen.
3. Is it really free to finish?
Some generators let you build free and charge at download. Test with a short throwaway resume before you invest time. I wrote a full checklist in free resume builder with no paywall: what to check before you start. SealApply has no paid plan, as the pricing page says.
4. What are the free limits?
Every free tool has a limit somewhere: a number of exports, a usage cap, or a feature held back. For SealApply, the limit is the AI provider’s own usage allowance, and you can add your own AI key if you reach it. Ask the same of any generator you try.
5. Does it build for one job or make a general resume?
This changes the result more than most people expect. A general resume tries to suit everyone and often suits no one. SealApply builds a resume for a specific job post, then lets you reuse your profile for the next one. If you prefer one master resume, a template generator may suit you better, and that is fine.
6. Can it invent details, and can you see what changed?
AI can add a skill, a number or a title you never claimed. The safeguard is review. In SealApply you open the job, press Customize Your Resume and go through each change. Whichever tool you use, read the finished page and delete anything you could not explain in an interview. More on the risks in what free resume AI can and cannot do.
7. Who made it, and what do they say about themselves?
Look for a named maker, a contact page and a privacy policy. I am Aakash, a software engineering student in Canada, and the about page says so. An anonymous tool with no contact details and a vague policy is a weaker bet for something as personal as a resume.
How do you run these checks in five minutes?
You do not need to audit every tool in depth. Open the privacy policy and search the page for the words “AI,” “third party” and “store.” Open the pricing page and look for what the free tier leaves out. Then try the tool with a fake resume: a made-up name, one job and two bullets. If it asks for payment, a phone number, or something you did not expect, you found out before sharing anything real.
If the answers are vague, that is information too. A tool that is comfortable explaining where your text goes usually says so clearly. One that hides it in a long policy, or does not have one, has told you what you needed to know.
What should you do after you generate a resume?
- Check fit with the job match score.
- See how a parser reads it with the ATS resume checker.
- Rework it for another posting with tailor resume to job description.
- Write a letter with the cover letter generator if the application asks for one.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to upload my resume to a free resume generator?
It depends on the tool. Check its privacy policy, find out whether an AI provider receives your text, and leave out details you do not need to share, such as a full home address.
Does a free resume generator need me to sign up?
Some do and some do not. SealApply does not need a SealApply account, but its default free AI asks you to sign in to Puter once.
What should I remove before uploading a resume?
Anything the generator does not need: ID numbers, date of birth, full street address and references. Your name, email and work history are usually enough.
Can a resume generator make up experience?
AI-based ones can. Pick a tool that shows each change and read every line before you use it.
Is there a free resume generator with no paid plan?
Yes. SealApply has no paid plan. The default free AI has its own usage allowance, and you can add your own AI key in settings.
What does SealApply do with the resume I upload?
Your resume or notes and the job post wait in your browser until you sign in to the free AI. When the AI runs, the text goes to the connected AI provider.
